Yes, if it is built for it. A garden room you can use all year needs insulated walls, roof and floor, good double glazing and a way to heat it. Without those, it will be cold in winter and hot in summer.
What makes a garden room usable all year?
Heat escapes through every part of a building. So a room that stays comfortable needs all of these:
- Insulated walls to hold the heat in
- An insulated roof, because warm air rises
- An insulated floor, so the cold does not come up from the ground
- Good double glazing in the windows and doors
- Power for heating, lights and sockets
Miss one of these out and the room will struggle in winter. Together, they are what make a room usable all year, not just on warm days.
How our garden rooms are built for every season
We design our garden rooms to be used all year round. Every room we supply and fit comes with:
- fully insulated composite walls
- a one-piece rubber roof with 100mm of insulation
- an insulated chipboard floor, ready for your choice of finish
- 'A' energy rated double glazing
- spotlights, a socket, wiring and a fuse box fitted inside
Our rooms are over 3 times more thermally efficient than a traditional timber garden building. That means they are warm in winter and cool in summer.
How to heat a garden room
A well insulated room holds on to its heat, but you still need something to make it. There are two common options:
- An electric radiator. Some customers use a standard oil-filled radiator in the colder months.
- Air conditioning. We can fit an air conditioning unit that heats, cools and dries the air. It gives you full control of the temperature all year. The unit outside needs 800mm of clear space around it.
Air conditioning is an extra. You can see the options on our garden room prices page.
Getting power to your garden room
We fit the electrics inside the room. The room also needs an armoured cable from your house. That cable is not in our prices, because the cost depends on how far the room is from your house.
What about summer?
Insulation works both ways. It keeps heat in during winter and helps keep it out in summer. Opening windows and doors let fresh air through on warm days, and air conditioning can cool the room too.
What people use their rooms for all year
Because they are comfortable in every season, our customers use their garden rooms for everyday things, not just sunny afternoons:
- a garden office for working from home
- a home gym
- a studio for hobbies, music or art
- a room for a home business, such as a salon or treatment room
- a granny annexe for a family member to live in
Questions to ask before you buy
- Are the walls, roof and floor all insulated?
- What rating is the double glazing?
- What electrics are included inside the room?
- How will you heat it, and is that included?
- Is the cable to the house included?
Questions people ask
Do garden rooms get cold in winter?
A garden room without insulation will. One with insulated walls, roof and floor and good double glazing stays comfortable with a small heater or air conditioning.
Can I work in a garden office all year round?
Yes. Our garden offices are fully insulated and comfortable to work in all year round. Add a heater for the colder months.
Do I need heating in a garden room?
In the colder months, yes. Insulation keeps the heat in, but you still need something to make it. An oil-filled radiator or an air conditioning unit both work well.
Will a garden room get too hot in summer?
Insulation helps keep the heat out as well as in. Opening the doors and windows, or adding air conditioning, keeps it comfortable on the hottest days.
